frieze is Europe’s leading contemporary art magazine, started in 1991 by Amanda Sharp and Matthew Slotover. The redesign aimed to make the magazine look more mature in its fifteenth year of publication whilst retaining some of the avant-garde qualities of the original magazines. The logo was redesigned to refine it, to fill the entire cover, whilst retaining its essential qualities. We introduced new typefaces, notably a stencil face Dala Floda, which gives the magazine a unique flavour. For the past two years the art director has worked with the system, allowing an organic development of the design. As a design consultant, Barnes visits the magazine on a monthly basis to critique the design and make suggestions that offer a fresh perspective.
